ASUS only released its 9in Eee PC 900 on May 1st, and it's yet to launch the Atom-powered Eee PC 901. Nonetheless, that hasn't stopped the Taiwanese manufacturer from planning ahead.

ASUS' chairman, Jonney Shih, sent out a COMPUTEX invitation to the media that provides the following little tidbit of useful information:

"ASUS is looking forward to welcoming you during Computex 2008 in Taipei, Taiwan, for the ASUS' 08 Computex Trilogy of launch events. We would also like to specially extend an invitation to you to attend the official global launch of the new Eee PC™ 901 and 1000 series."

As it turns out, that Eee PC 1000 is already on display at ASUS' under-construction stand:

There aren't any further details just yet, but we're assuming the 10in model will utilise an Intel Atom processor, pitting it firmly against MSI's 10in Wind.

We don't yet know the cost of ASUS' new Eee additions, but with the Eee PC 900 currently priced at £329, we dread to think what the Atom-powered 9in and 10in models will fetch. Has ASUS forgotten the goal of low-cost ultra-portable laptops?

plot lost.

The original eee was great as it could be found for just shy of £200.

That was it, thats why people liked it. There where better ultraportables (the sony's) which had better battery life, better CPUs, better screens.

It was all about the price point. Its a shame really i might of bought one of the atom ones for a toy, but at their current price, its just way to much.
Interesting that the 10“ model still carries the ASUS branding, when early shots of the 9” version suggested that it would be dropped in favour of the ‘Eee PC’ logo on its own…

If Eee PC is indeed intended to become a standalone brand then perhaps this 10" model would make sense as a ‘Flagship’ for the Eee range?

However, under ASUS branding this seems to me to be just a step too far away from the original ethos (or should that be eeethos??) of low-power, low-cost computing to really be considered an Eee PC at all. Perhaps an attempt by ASUS to use the success of the Eee to sell a wider range of portable products?
They have become way too expensive. With the impending release of the 901 and another price hike for that model it seems greed has taken over from the original principle of what the EeePC stood for in the first place.
So long as they continue to offer the 701*, 900 and/or 901 variants , it doesn't matter. More options = good. The only complaint you can have is that your Eee PC isn't the top model any more. :P

Perhaps they'll fall in price again when SSDs do? Or more likely they'll keep the same price and give you a bigger SSD.

* It appears they've relaunched the 701 4gb with a slightly lower capacity battery, which is a bit of a rip-off in itself, given that it's the same price as before, and the battery performance was rather lacking to begin with.
gav given the price point keeps rising, i'd that the old model-t ford approche would be best.

You can have it any colour as long as its black.

keep the costs right down. Dont turn Eee PC into an ecconomy laptop market. There's already one of those.
