Toshiba's family of Qosmio notebooks are known for their high-performance credentials, and with Intel unveiling its mobile Nehalem processors at this week's IDF, it's time to introduce the Qosmio X500.

The system, pictured below, is housed in a "sleek, glossy black chassis" with a backlit keyboard and LED-feather-touch controls. All sounds somewhat sexy, but we see it as little more than a beast.

Our opinion might revolve around the Qosmio X500's innards, however, as the system houses a 2.8GHz Intel's newly-unveiled Core i7 720QM processor. That's joined by up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, NVIDIA's GeForce GTS 250MNV graphics - complete with 1GB of graphics memory - and up to a terabyte of storage made possible by a pair of 500GB hard drives.

You'd want a big ol' display to go with all that, so Toshiba has equipped the Qosmio X500 with an 18.4in TruBrite LCD providing a full-HD 1,920x1,080 resolution.

There's a 6x Blu-ray writer, and if you're planning on a mobile movie experience, you might enjoy the integrated Harmon Kardon stereo speaker system. If your Blu-ray collection hasn't yet got going, fear not, Toshiba's Resolution+ upscaling technology will upconvert your standard-def DVDs, too.

Elsewhere, you'll find a multi-touch trackpad, a HD webcam, Wireless N connectivity, Bluetooth, sleep-and-charge USB ports, eSATA and a five-in-one card reader.

There's thankfully no mention of battery life or pricing, but we'll find out exactly what the damage is when the Qosmio X500 hits UK stores in late October.

Unless it comes with a fusion power generator I don't think there's much point talking about battery life. It's no ultra-portable, that's for sure.
made possible by a pair of 500TB hard drives

Mint! Must be the world's first petabyte laptop surely!
