Details are scarce but it's one to look out for during CES 2012, Corning, creators of the tough 'Gorilla Glass', found protecting the displays of many modern mobiles and netbooks, has announced that it will be displaying its new 'Gorilla Glass 2' technology at next week's trade show.

"Handset and tablet device manufacturers are clearly driving toward higher functionality from thinner designs. Corning's latest innovation in Gorilla Glass technology is very well positioned to meet these challenges and enable broader touch technology penetration," stated senior vice president James Steiner. Corning's press release also went on to state that full product details would be revealed in an announcement on Monday 9th and that the firm would have live demonstrations of the technology at its booth, along with an example of the Gorilla Glass applied to an 82 inch multitouch LCD and more.

It's clear from the announcement that the firm intends to focus on delivering the tough protection of Gorilla Glass in a thinner panel, enabling the downsizing of smartphones to continue. We wonder exactly what Corning meant by enabling "broader touch technology penetration" and wonder if there will be improved integration of the touch layer with Corning's protective glass or if the company is simply referring to application in other industries. We'll also be interested to see if the firm has an answer to the expected arrival of flexible OLED displays. All shall be revealed next week.

I havent used a Gorilla glass device (Both my HTC Desire HD and my sony tablet S havent got it)

If they are making it for TV`s as well now it could be really good for people with young kids etc
Is that a 15" Macbook air?
My Galaxy S2 is thrown in my bag with keys, wallet and other bits and bobs. So far there isn't a single miniscule scratch on the screen - even when angled into the light you can't even see any fine sratches.

I've never used a protective case, yet the phone looks almost as good as the day it arrived almost 8 months ago.

As such I'm a big fan of gorilla glass now, excellent scratch resistance.

Mine has a whopping and deep scratch on it from being in my pocket with keys for under 2 minutes!

Gorilla Glass is great when pressure is applied, it becomes stronger, but when sharp edges lightly glide by it's another story.
“broader touch technology penetration”

Giggedy!
