AOC has emailed HEXUS to fill us in on a new monitor which is being introduced, equipped with two 7W ONKYO speakers. The AOC i2473Pwm includes the punchy pair of ONKYO drivers within its base, as you can see from the pictures within this article.

The monitor specialist announced the 24-inch Full HD IPS Display, claiming it to be perfect for connecting to PCs, gaming consoles, smartphones and DVD players and enjoying "Full HD visuals and stereo quality sound while gaming, surfing the web or watching videos". The base integrated ONKYO speakers combined with the connectivity the monitor offers apparently make this screen into an "entertainment hub".

AOC i2473Pwm specifications:

  • Panel: TFT Active Matrix IPS LCD, LED Backlight
  • Optimal Resolution: 1920x1080x60Hz
  • Aspect Ratio: 16:9
  • Diagonal Viewable Area: 23.8-inches
  • Brightness: 250 cd/m² (typical)
  • Response Time: 5ms (typical)
  • Colour Depth: 16.7M
  • Inputs: 1 x VGA, 2 x HDMI (1X MHL)
  • Speaker: 7w x2 (ONKYO)
  • Adjustability Tilt: -5° to +20°
  • Mount: VESA 75mm x75mm Wall Mount Compliant
  • Special Features: AOC's e-Saver, Screen+ and iMenu software
  • Cabinet Colour: Black with Hairline Texture in the front and matte in the back

AOC says that the placement of the speakers at the monitor base "provides higher quality audio than other monitor drivers, which are typically placed behind the screen, producing stifled, inferior sound". I am currently imagining my paper clips, plectrums and Wrigleys Extra bouncing around reacting to the sound waves – that's what clutters my current monitor base.

Curiously the AOC i2473Pwm includes VESA mount ability – what happens to the monitor stand with integrated speakers when you wall mount this monitor is not detailed. Also sadly the existing mount is tiltable but not height adjustable.

Overall this monitor might be a good choice for someone who wants a minimal, uncluttered desktop. This monitor could provide a very clean desk space with some kind of SFF PC strapped on its back and a matching keyboard and mouse. The MHL capability is a nice convenient consumer feature too.

AOC points us to Amazon US to buy the monitor; it's nowhere to be seen on Amazon UK at the moment though. Amazon says that stock will be available from 22nd May and the price is set at $249.99 including shipping.

Bit of gimmick really and it's not like Onkyo are anything special, far from it in fact

Indeed, probably on a par with AOC!
What they win on more bass they lose on lack of stereo and added bulkyness. Might suit someone somewhere, but I can't imagine who. If you remotely care about sound you won't be using integrated speakers no matter what brand.
And its about time we gave up with putting VGA connections on monitors, come on stick a dvi on it instead!
My monitor base has a swiss army knife and eye drops on it at the moment, anyway.. if this were a 27“ model i'd be interested, because I could then ditch the bookshelf speakers which sit either side of my current 22” display.

AOC do seem to knock out some pretty good value for money screens these days, keep it up I say.
