Synology has expanded its line of network-attached storage solutions with the launch of the four-bay DS415+.

Designed for "small and medium-sized businesses, as well as enthusiast home users," the new addition features a 2.4GHz, quad-core Intel Atom C2558 processor with a floating-point unit as well as AES-NI hardware encryption, and is backed up by 2GB of DDR3 memory.

Aiming to serve the needs of more-demanding customers, the quad-core box is outfitted with dual LAN ports supporting failover and link aggregation. In the latter mode, Synology reckons the NAS will deliver average read and write speeds in excess of 228MB/s and 233MB/s, respectively.

The DS415+ is available starting today priced at around £470 from popular UK retailers, and it isn't the day's only new Synology release. The NAS specialist has also made available a beta version of its next DiskStation Manager operating system.

DSM 5.1 Beta is available to download for a wide range of existing units, and Synology's beta program has an added incentive - the firm tells us that the three beta testers who "provide the most valuable assistance and feedback" will each be given a DS214se for their efforts.

A brief overview of some of DSM 5.1 Beta's new features is available below, and if you're eager to enter the beta program, head over to this URL: https://www.synology.com/en-uk/support/beta_dsm_5_1

DSM 5.1 Key Features:

Protect data with versatile backup and security tools: LUN snapshot is now schedulable and LUN backup performance is 169% faster through network. More packages can be completely backed up. As for system protection, the new Security Advisor scans the system and detects potential vulnerabilities, such as weak passwords, malware, misconfigured services, and pending updates. Packages can now be digitally signed to avoid using tampered executables, while AppArmor enforces stricter file access permissions for programs in DSM. Service-interface binding allows users to assign specific services to dedicated network interfaces for extra security.

Increase productivity: Proxy Server speeds up Internet browsing while securing the network thanks to its various caching, filtering, and authentication options. File Station can now connect to a remote FTP or WebDAV server, while its new email client provides a quicker alternative for file sharing. IPv6 support has been expanded to QuickConnect and more DSM services. NFS VAAI support brings new virtualisation options such as File Clone and Reserve Space. SSD caching technologies is more intuitive with a revamped interface, a real-time hit rate statistics to evaluate the utilisation, and a recommendation on appropriate SSD cache size.

Create a better and more integrated private cloud: File versioning in Cloud Station can now be disabled to save storage space. Cloud Station also supports synchronising data in encrypted folders to protect privacy, as well as Windows ACL for more precise user privileges’ setting. Cloud Sync is compatible with more public cloud providers, such as OneDrive, Box or hubiC. In addition, Cloud Sync and all Cloud Station’s client software now supports selective sync, allowing users to determine which folders, file types and size to be sync. Cloud backup offers a contingency plan for archives with support for Microsoft Azure, SFR, and hicloud. Furthermore, Glacier Backup now supports file-level dedupe and restoration from Amazon Glacier.

Sharing video, audio, and photo content has never been easier: Video Station now offers a streamlined and more pleasant user experience. The smart search feature and revamped folder page increase usability and efficiency. Video Station will now automatically look for subtitles on Internet. Watch status lets users see at a glance which videos aren’t finished yet. The slideshow feature on Photo Station combines background music and transition effects for professional-looking presentation. Share your picture, music or video collections with a public link. In addition, most of the mobile apps have been tweaked; from quick search to improved integration or new design.

Note Station and DS note empower users with flexible and secured collaboration tools: Create, share, and sync thousands of digital notes and notebooks with DSM 5.1. DS note provides Android and iOS users with mobile access to Note Station. In addition to a rich-text editor, media content can be previewed instantly. For group collaboration, Note Station and DS note support, version history, and restoration. In addition, sensitive notes can be encrypted with user-defined passwords.

I'm really impressed with this model, I'll be looking forward to the 8-bay variant.
I have the DS414. Went for it because of the dual NIC. This looks like a decent step up from it, supports visualisation too!

Very impressed with my Synology, after using a ‘spare parts’ server for years, the simplicity of them is great.

My old server is only on for about 1 hour per week now, to keep a backup of the Synology.

It is a large initial cost, especially when you compare it with the fantastic HP Microservers. Will take a few years to make back the power saving difference, I think mine uses about 15W idle. My old server is nearer 90W idle.
Brilliant products. Have been using synology for some years now and never had any issues.

Visualisation? Don't you mean virtualisation - VMware, VirtualBox, KVM, et al? Last time I looked into Synology that was up there in the spec list (although in the end I chickened out and just bought a WD “appliance” - minimal setup).
Yes, yes I do :)

Damned spellcheck. First I right clicked it, then changed it to American spelling with a z in it, then edited it back out. Should have ignored that pesky red line :D
