Corsair launches Enthusiast Series TX V2 power supplies

Corsair has today taken the wraps off of its Enthusiast Series TX V2 power supplies.

Introduced as the latest instalment to the long-standing TX series line, the new V2 units will initially be available in 650W, 750W and 850W capacities and are aimed at "gamers, high-performance PC enthusiasts, and anybody who requires reliable, low-noise power delivery".

All three models feature a familiar +12V rail and an ultra-quiet 140mm fan, but Corsair has improved energy efficiency from 80 per cent to 85 per cent. That's enough to slap on an 80PLUS Bronze certification, and we're told the improved efficiency will help lower noise levels during use.

A revised DC-to-DC converter design promises superior voltage regulation and consequently less ripple and noise, but there's no option for modular cabling - that sought-after feature continues to be reserved for Corsair's Professional Series. Instead, the Extreme Series TX V2 provides a mass of fixed cabling with support for NVIDIA or AMD multi-GPU configurations, making it ideal for mid-to-high-end gaming rigs.

We've yet to see a mention of UK pricing, but all three models are now available in the US priced at $99 for the TX650 V2, $119 for the TX750 V2 and $139 for the top-of-the-line TX850 V2.

[Update] SCAN.co.uk* now has all three TX V2 power supplies up for pre-order priced at £71.96, £85.81 and £96.42 for the 650W, 750W and 850W units, respectively.

Corsair psu are good, and I've got them in most of my pcs, but they have so many. I have trouble pick one over another my-self. I know they have a help guide but it does not explain the “why” its better or what function it has over another very clearly.

I phoned scan before buy just to check just to be sure.

_alias, what in particular do you find confusing about the line-up? It's always useful to get feedback as it helps us explain the range better going forward.

Briefly, CX is entry-level; TX is enthusiast spec (uprated components, 50C rating etc) but with captive cables; GS is similar to TX but with switchable lighting; HX is enthusiast spec but modular and often slightly higher efficiency (Bronze/Silver, and a bit longer warranty); and AX is the flagship fully-modular range - latest technology, 80 PLUS Gold etc.

Thought the TX was the better-than-budget line, with AX at the top of the range, and HX somewhere in between (seemed to be a degree of overlap betwixt HX and AX to me).

Agree with the positive marks for Corsair - got an AX750 myself in December and it's proven to be a pretty solid performer so far. This is my first Corsair - used to use Enermax exclusively but last two PSU's have been Seasonic, moved to Corsair this time because of the better warranty than the equivalent Seasonic. Very impressed with the total package - including a case badge (which didn't stick), a good selection of cables along with a bag to keep the spares tidy and a separate fabric bag for the PSU (which was ideal for protecting my netbook!) :woowoo:

Only downside of my AX750 is that it's accoustically noisy - not fan noise or anything normal, but instead if the system gets stressed it squeaks and hisses - sounds like someone rubbing bubblewrap. I'm not sure whether this is a bad thing or not, but I've not noticed any drop in voltage etc from motherboard monitors when it does this, plus it's not a loud or particularly annoying noise. One of these days I'll get around to contacting Corsair technical support and see whether I need to make use of that nice long warranty, or whether this is just “one of those things” and just ignore it unless it breaks.

You might be describing coil whine, which could be coming from the motherboard, or graphics cards. If it's the PSU then we will replace it, if you talk to your reseller or go via the Corsair site.

There is some overlap with HX and AX, as both are very high quality, efficient, and modular, but the main differences are that AX are fully-modular (HX semi-modular), use the latest technology, and are 80 PLUS Gold.

Out of interest, apart from the improved efficiency are there any other improvements to the second version of the current CX series??
