Taiwanese memory specialist Geil has launched what it calls the "world's first fully RGB illuminated DDR4 memory module". The GeIL EVO X series DDR4 memory modules are compatible with the latest X99 and Z170 motherboards, support speeds ranging from 3,000MHz, scaling up beyond 4,000MHz, and include Geil's Hybrid-Independent-Light-Module (HILM).

Late last year we saw G.Skill launch its Trident Z RGB series memory modules. So it's debatable whether Geil has indeed managed a world's first here. However the approach is different. G.Skill Trident Z RGB lighting is powered via the memory slot and the lighting is said to have "minimal impact" on performance. Meanwhile Geil uses a 9V/12V fan power connector on each module to power its HILM. Furthermore, Geil says its RGB lighting is "completely separated from the memory module and combines LEDs, microprocessor, circuits, switch and dual-power-source into a single modular solution," and it promises performance "without compromise".

A bonus for RGB lighting lovers is the Geil EVO X compatibility with RGB lighting control apps from the likes of Asus (Aura), Gigabyte (ambient LED), and MSI (Mystic Light). This requires the memory modules to be connected to the respective motherboard's 4-pin RGB header. This way all your RGB PC system components can synchronise.

Geil EVO X RGB DDR4 memory modules have a 'manual mode' for those who don't have a cross compatible motherboard or don't want to hook up all the wiring. A sliding switch (red, as pictrued below) provides real-time control of the RGB functions and facilitates colour rotation, music sync, or various colour 'breathing' effects.

These memory modules and kits are available with either glossy white or matte black heatspreaders. Full specs of its various EVO X DDR4 modules and kits are available on the Geil product pages.

Separating the LEDs and driver circuit from the RAM seems like a good idea. OTOH, comparing these to the G.skill RGB ones, it's like a comparative study in good and bad product design. Not only do the Geils manage to look cheap and plasticky, they top it all off with that god-awful sliding switch doohickey. Oh, and the fact that you need to ROUTE WIRES TO YOUR RAM. Because that won't be a *************** hassle at all, nooooo. Not at all.
That is officially the ugliest RAM I've ever seen, if you put that in your computer you are a bad person.

Challenge Accepted… :D
Always fancied myself as a bit of a bad boy!

But seriously, they just ‘breathe’? No patterns or anything? Just breathing in RGB?
I have absolutely nothing against RGB kit… just how boring people make them.
This RGB gimmick is getting out of hands…

Well… what would you have them do? I don't know how open or visible your system is but if I had a christmas tree crazy-lights effect in mine it would be wasted most of the time. Breathing *does something* without being either really distracting or too plain.

On a different note, doesn't compatiblity with Aura etc. allow these to do more than breathe anyway with the right setup?
