At an event in South Korea this month Asus unveiled a very compact desktop PC called the PN50. This diminutive desktop measures just 115 x 115 x 49mm (4.5 x 4.5 x 1.9-inch) and weighs 700g (1.5lbs). While it wears similar clothes to the existing Asus PN60, the new PN50 has an important change within. In place of the 8th gen Intel Core processor of the PN60, the new Asus PN50 utilises one of AMD's new Ryzen 4000U APUs.

The following processor options are available for Asus PN50 buyers:

  • Video out: 1x HDMI 2.0 and 1x DisplayPort 1.4
  • Audio out: 3.5mm headphone jack, digital audio out via HDMI port
  • Networking: Gigabit Ethernet (RJ45), Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 via Intel AX200 M.2 card

  • Misc: Power button, IR receiver, and HDD LED

AMD launched its Ryzen Mobile 4000-series (Renoir) processors back in mid-March. It includes the U-series (15W) and H-series (45W) sub-series - aimed at ultrathin and gaming laptops, respectively. HEXUS will be testing a Ryzen 7 4800U APU equipped Lenovo YogaSlim 7 in the coming weeks.

Surface Laptop 4 with AMD Ryzen 7 4800U APU rumours

Yesterday Twitter-based data miner Tum Apisak dug up a 3DMark database entry which is thought to come from an upcoming Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 design. The entry, featuring an unknown Microsoft device, featured test results of a system powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 4800U.

If you check out the processor table atop of this article you will see this processor is the most powerful U-series part with 8C/16T, boost clocks up to 4.2GHz, and the fastest integrated Radeon graphics.

Nice. Just needs thunderbolt, but guess that'll have to wait for the 5000.
I'd like a version with the H series instead of the U series.

If you look carefully at the photo, the front USB type C socket has the Thunderbolt logo next to it, although Thunderbolt isn't mentioned in the specification, oddly enough…

I think that's a logo for a ‘fast charging port’ rather than Thunderbolt because it lacks the downwards pointing arrow.

See the table at the bottom of the page, TB and fast charge are at the bottom of the table; https://www.kensington.com/news/docking-connectivity-blog/usb-c-demystified/

I'm sure they won't be able to say it's thunderbolt without paying Intel vast sums of money. So others could say it's “thunderbolt compatible” maybe?
