Intel showed off its Compute Stick earlier this year, at the CES is Las Vegas. We've seen similar PC-on-a-stick devices before and after this Intel branded example but the overall package and the dollar pricing of the Intel Compute Stick seemed to appeal to HEXUS readers.

Now we have good and not so good news for you about the Intel Compute Stick. Sources speaking to Fudzilla indicate that the device will be reaching the UK in "late April/early May". You can see this quote in the article comments, from the UK-based 'Stick PC Store'. The not so good news concerns the pricing. The stick which includes Windows 8.1 with Bing is said to be priced around €180 to become around £180 inc VAT in the UK at release time. The Linux version will be priced just above €120, say the Fudzilla sources.

At the CES show Intel indicated dollar pricing of the Compute Stick as being $149 for the Windows 8.1 version and just $89 for the Linux version. The Windows version of the stick is higher spec, it features 32GB of storage and 2GB of RAM. The Linux version of the stick is equipped with just 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM. Common specs of the HDMI-stick style PC are; a quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F processor, a mini and full-sized USB port, an SD-card slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4, hardware power button. The Intel Compute Stick measures about 4-inches long.

For reference a very similar Hanspree HDMI 'Micro-PC', with Windows 8.1 with Bing pre-installed (plus Intel Atom Z3735F, 32GB storage and 2GB of RAM spec), is already available in the UK priced at under £130 including delivery on Amazon UK.

I was thinking about using this as an HTPC and (thanks to Virgin TV anywhere) cable set top box.

At that price I will think again
hmmm… £80 for a nexus player or £130ish (the intel will soon drop I would guess) for a full blown windows mini pc. I know which way I'd go.
You could get an AM1 mini itx system for a lot less than that.
I've given up looking at these HDMI PCs or media streamer boxes. Last month I bought a Asus Vivo VM40 mini PC to use for a media player.

Bought from the US because it was so much cheaper than the UK, even with the import duty.

It's only a dual core Celeron CPU, but it's enough to play back full HD video via XBMC whilst running as a torrent box too.
