Gigabyte is upgrading its range of EL-20 series IoT Gateway solutions. These devices will become more powerful in both compute and graphics tasks thanks to Gigabyte phasing in new Intel Braswell D 14nm (Airmont) processor designs.

Intel's Pentium N3710 and Celeron N3060 processors offer higher performance than their predecessors in both compute tasks and graphics, says Gigabyte. Importantly for such devices, the performance perks delivered don't have any impact on the thermal and power envelopes of the processors.

All the Gigabyte EL-20 series of IoT Gateway Solutions offer the following minimum features:

  • 2x SO-DIMM slots, up to 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L memory
  • Dual GbE LAN ports
  • Dual band Intel Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n/ac & Bluetooth 4.0 module
  • 1x Full-size Mini-PCIe for 3G module or mSATA storage and 1xSD-Card
  • 2x HDMI and 1x eDP on-board
  • 4x USB 3.0 ports
  • Total size of only 141 x 108 x 27mm
  • Supports Windows 7 / 8.1 / 10 and Android 5.1

There's a trio of new models that provide variations on the above specs. Firstly the EL-20-3700-32GB, which comes with an Intel Pentium N3710 (4 cores, 4 threads, 1.6 - 2.56 GHz) installed, is equipped with 32GB of onboard eMMC memory. It works within an SDP of just 4 watts.

Secondly the EL-20-3050-32GB, comes with an Intel Celeron N3060 (2 cores, 2 threads, 1.6 - 2.48 GHz) installed plus, again, 32GB of onboard eMMC memory. Lastly the EL-20-3050-8GB is also powered by an Intel Celeron N3060 and comes with 8GB onboard eMMC memory.

Whichever model you choose, Gigabyte says that its high durability motherboard, based on the Ultra-compact Form Factor, installed in a fanless, industrial grade aluminium case will provide good service. These systems are said to be ideal for both highly flexible IoT Gateways or digital signage solutions.

Micro Computing, there's an increasing demand for enthusiasts, media presentation and advertising/POS engines that have systems like this. I assist a shop with their IT infrastructure and something like this as their EPOS systems because their in a listed/old building means routing cables is problematic but wireless can traverse reasonably well and with the gain and number of those aerials means it would be better suited.

But micro computing has been increasing in demand for a while. In the network security world I work in, micro systems like these are perfect as portable firewalls or SOHO/Small Business Units.

For me: Firewall / UTM platform - 2 lans for internet and inernal network, plus wifi to run the guest network. Bought something similar based on the 3150 Atom.
unless it has intel dual NIC cards i would not use this as a router/firewall, but for other tasks it be fine
