Conclusion
...the transition from GTX 980M to GTX 1070 provides meaningful gains during real-world gameplay. The favoured combination for today's best 15.6in gaming laptops appears to be an Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics. Add a dollop of DDR4 memory and a sprinkling of solid-state NVMe storage and you have the makings of an ultra-fast mobile machine.
Putting said ingredients to good use is Gigabyte's latest-generation P35X. This year's v6 variant doesn't offer wholesale changes compared to its predecessor, but the transition from GTX 980M to GTX 1070 provides meaningful gains during real-world gameplay.
Performance is excellent during work or play, and though gaming is the laptop's primary ambition, the understated chassis, a full-size keyboard and an optical drive allow the system to double as an office workhorse or desktop replacement. Heat and noise are obvious caveats as the laptop struggles to tame the GTX 1070, and if you're looking to tick as many boxes as possible at the £1,999 price point, you may lament the fact that G-Sync hasn't made the cut.
Bottom line: if you liked the look of the P35X v5 but found yourself sitting on the fence awaiting a new GPU, the refreshed v6 model offers everything that's good about the original plus an extra chunk of graphics muscle.
The Good The Bad Core i7 and GeForce GTX 1070
Enough power for today's modern games
Good selection of I/O ports
Could be an effective desktop replacement
Not as garish as other gaming laptops Heat and noise can be bothersome
G-Sync would have been nice
