Conclusion

...it's a niche solution, but those in the market for a 17in laptop that excels at full-HD gameplay ought to have the X7 DT v8 on their shortlist.

The X7 DT v8 is the best 17in Aorus laptop to date and the Taiwanese manufacturer has achieved that accolade by stripping away the excess to focus on features that matter to enthusiast gamers.

Whereas earlier efforts have employed outlandish configurations with mixed real-world results, the X7 DT v8 keeps things relatively simple with a hexa-core Intel Core i7-8850H processor, full-fat GeForce GTX 1080 graphics, 16GB of dual-channel DDR4 memory and a fast 512GB M.2 SSD. Add to the equation a good-quality 1080p IPS panel offering G-Sync support at up to 144Hz, and you have one of the most potent gaming laptops around.

Aorus' presentation is sleek, with decent build quality and little in the way of bloatware, and other than the price tag, there are only two obvious drawbacks that you'll need to live with; fan noise is predictably off-putting; and battery life isn't anything to write home about.

Bottom line: it's a niche solution, but those in the market for a 17in laptop that excels at full-HD gameplay ought to have the X7 DT v8 on their shortlist.

The Good

The Bad
i7-8850H and GTX 1080 is a potent mix
Silky G-Sync gaming at up to 144Hz
Wide range of connectivity options
Sleek for a 17in gaming laptop

Fan noise is distracting
Poor battery life
Is 1080p enough at this price point?

The issue here is the 1080 for 1080. The feature set of the card will be obsolete before the card starts to struggle with FPS as it's already pretty old. It seems like a waste of money to me but I do get that these kinds of laptops are for people who want the best and no compromises.

My old gaming laptop had about 6 fans in but it was a desktop P4…
way overpriced and bulky
