Final thoughts and rating

...the Gigabyte Z77X-UP4 TH's standout features target a specific market. If that happens to be you, it's as good a board as we've come across.

Gigabyte has jumped on the Intel Z77 chipset bandwagon with veritable gusto, releasing no fewer than 21 boards for various markets. Priced at £150 and therefore representing a mid-pack board, the Z77X-UP4 TH takes in the company's upgraded cooling technology and integrates dual Thunderbolt ports for cutting-edge, high-speed connectivity.

And it is primarily the inclusion of these two technologies that are the main selling points, as Gigabyte defocuses on overclocking features such as a debug LCD and voltage-monitoring points, for example.

We believe you really do need to be contemplating widespread Thunderbolt use allied to a mid-level CPU overclock to get the most out of the 'UP4 TH, because otherwise the price premium over comparably-featured boards simply isn't worth it.

A robust, clean-cut and capable motherboard, the Gigabyte Z77X-UP4 TH's standout features target a specific market. If that happens to be you, it's as good a board as we've come across.

The Good

Clean layout, good looks
Solid overclocking performance
Dual Thunderbolt ports
Uprated 'UP' cooling has merit

The Bad

Obvious price premium for Thunderbolt
Sacrifices enthusiast-orientated features
