Conclusion

The AOC Q2778VQE is a fine all-round monitor for a variety of usage scenarios - gaming, media consumption, productivity work and, with calibration, even photo or video editing.

A recommended retail price of £299 makes the AOC Q2778VQE aggressively priced for a 27in QHD display. Cost alone makes this AOC panel worthy of further consideration by anyone looking to make the upgrade to QHD, but this monitor has plenty of other merits to lure speculative buyers.

AOC boasts a 'state-of-the-art' TN panel which, at first glance, seems like an oxymoronic statement to make. As a general rule of thumb AHVA, IPS and PLS panels all deliver better quality than TN. In the case of the Q2778VQE the panel quality is akin to IPS, with its vibrant colour reproduction and wide viewing angles, and the fairly average input latency pushes it even further into the IPS camp.

The AOC Q2778VQE is a fine all-round monitor for a variety of usage scenarios - gaming, media consumption, productivity work and, with calibration, even photo or video editing. To the picky buyer most boxes have been ticked with exception of the stand which is, at best, mediocre for the calibre of the panel.

The AOC Q2778VQE demonstrates that QHD can be a viable alternative to UHD. A vibrant high-quality panel blended with extensive connectivity and, more importantly, a competitive price makes AOC's latest offering a tempting buy for any desktop user looking to take the next step from 1080p.

Yet with an MSRP of £299.99 the Q2778VQE is among the most affordable QHD displays on the market.
Have to say I don't agree with this. You can buy great quality 27" IPS QHD displays from the likes of BenQ with flicker-free for cheaper than this TN display.

I am aware of the BenQ panel but having not tested it I can't really draw comparisons on the panel quality, but I have a few comments to add nonetheless.

£299.99 is MSRP, the actual retail price will likely settle in a similar, or potentially lower, price bracket to the BenQ panel.

With regards to the TN vs IPS comparison, it's not as clear cut as ‘IPS is better’. Quality is variable for any panel type and some TN panels are better than some IPS panels, the ROG Swift is a great example and this monitor is another.
I upgraded to a QHD display a year-ish back. Maybe I'd go 4K for a huge monitor, but seemed sweet spot for a 27".

I wrote off multi-monitor setups (for more immersive gaming) as with 2 screens I'd be staring at the bezels between them, and with 3 you need some serious GPU power (or 3 low-res monitors).

What I quite fancy are the 3440x1440 panels (same horizontal pixel count as above, but more across for ultra-widescreen). Samsung even have a nice (or not, I've not seen it) curved one.
Anybody tried one?
Dell also offer a 25 inch WQHD monitor for 250 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-U2515H-25-Inch-Monitor-2560/dp/B00P6O3YYO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426196886&sr=8-1&keywords=dell+25+inch

Better stand, USB 3 Hub (including a quick charging port) and small bezels.

This AOC seems awfully overpriced. I got my Asus PB278Q (albeit manufacture refurb with a 3 month warranty) for just over 300, and it's better in every way (though I did get mine quite cheap compared to the market at the time).

Maybe I missed them, but I would have liked to have seen some images showing viewing angles :)

The Dell unit has a £289.99 MSRP and is 2inches smaller. Agreed it has a better stand though.
