The DS920+ and TS-453D are direct rivals, but it is clear that the Synology is held back by its 1GbE connection. Hooked up via 2.5GbE, the Qnap helps itself to a performance increase of 150 per cent in the sequential tests.

2.5GbE should, in our estimation, be deemed a minimum for a forward-looking NAS solution, and it's worth pointing out that the TS-453D isn't the first to make the transition. Asustor's Nimbustor 4 offered the higher-speed connection a year ago.
