Final thoughts and rating

Power Ethernet is off to a strong start with the first-generation PE Socket, but this is a solution that shouldn't be considered as a like-for-like alternative to running Cat5 cables.

If the option is available (pre- or post-build), equipping a property with low-cost dedicated network cabling will always deliver the best performance. But running large reels of new cable isn't always an option, and that's where Powerline solutions come into play.

For those awkward areas that wireless won't reach, the Power Ethernet Socket is a particularly attractive solution. Fitting neatly in place of a double-gang wall socket, it's well designed, easy to install and delivers stable network performance for up to four devices.

But an off-putting price tag of around £100 per socket is a major downside, and if Power Ethernet has aspirations of becoming a viable alternative to the numerous Homeplug adaptors already on the market, it'll need to slash a hefty amount off the asking and get up to speed by introducing a quicker 500Mbps model.

The Good

Attractive design
Fairly easy to install
Provides four Ethernet ports
May reach areas that wireless won't

The Bad

Very expensive
Solid but unspectacular performance

Fantastic idea, if I had the cash I'd be changing a bunch of sockets in my house for these!

Me too, the 4 port switches built in make them an even better option but the price is just stupid, considering 2 powerline adaptors (500mb) and a gigabit switch can be had for under £50. Hopefully the next revision will be cheaper and have more features as the article suggests (usb charging ports would be a fantastic addition!)
I saw these awhile ago and think they are a nice idea. the price put me off as well.
I've been considering using various techniques to hide cables around the house. It would require a lot more work than installing one of these things, but given the price of this adapter and the the superior speed of an actual cable, I think it's a neck and neck.

This is, nonetheless, a good idea, and I hope they keep releasing new products.
Also lacks an on/off switch! Pretty obvious omission!
