MediaTek merges three wireless charging standards

I keep seeing, time after time, the VHS versus Beta type competition.
Instead of joining forces and making something great, they compete to make their own version and the consumer suffers with a pile of incompatible products, all doing the same thing.
For all our intelligence, we can be so inefficient and stupid.
So it is always good to find that someone can come out with something like this, that is not only compatible with all the competition, but it works better than the incompatible competition.

But if it costs three license fees to implement it, then it will be more expensive than other implementations and might now sell. Just like vhs/beta, is it all about controlling the money from patent fees not about what is best.

I realise it always comes down to the money, marketing and perception. Beta had better performance but VHS came out first with the longer play times. So more movies were available and people thought that was good enough. So the consumer lost out on quality in the end. The old analogue system had so much snow at times that it probably did not matter.
As I have not seen a price for these chargers, I could not comment on that, but we can always hope for some common sense (should really be uncommon given how rare it has become) will prevail and sell it at a reasonable price.
My point is the waste with a pile of different things, all trying to do the same thing that do not quite live up to what they are supposed to do. I have tried using 2 of the 3 wireless chargers which are both very temperamental and sometimes are frustratingly hard to get to work. Even placing a device with a Qi receiver as factory standard, you still have to correctly align it and if it gets even the slightest bump, it stops charging. It takes so long to register that the device is charging when you have to keep adjusting it, that it becomes too frustrating when setting it up.
This new one appears to overcome the distance and placement problems, as well as having a higher amperage for charging. So even if it does cost more (hopefully not too expensive), if it lives up to the hype it will be a product worth considering. I particularly like the ability to just place your device on the bench and it charges from a unit which is out of sight. Besides, if it is successful, costs normally come down over time.
We will just have to wait and see.
