The next format war?

Competition in the eBook market is set to hot up today as it's being widely reported that Google and Sony are teaming up to bring Google's extensive library of scanned, out-of-copyright books to Sony's Reader eBook device.

The current best known eBook is Amazon's Kindle device, of which version two was recently launched. This announcement will apparently give the Sony Reader a larger available library of titles.

There don't appear to be any official announcements from either company, but Sony's online eBook store makes the following claim: "Together with Google, Sony brings you access to over 500,000 public domain books for free."

The books are already available online from Google Books but, until now, not on a portable reader. The Sony Reader and Kindle are priced at roughly the same level but have different features and use different formats. We could be looking at the next big format war.
