Specs, price and availability

Leslie Sobon, who moved from Dell to become product marketing VP at AMD, said: "AMD and XPS are two brands known to deliver extreme gaming performance. With AMD's Dragon platform technology, Dell is enabling an incredible end user experience.

"Featuring the AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition processor, ATI Radeon  HD 4800 Series graphics and AMD 7-Series chipsets, Dragon hardware joins innovative AMD tuning software in the XPS 625 that will drive the gaming experience to a new level."

The XPS 625 is available in the UK starting at £799 ($999 in the US), but this isn't strictly a Dragon system as it has a Phenom X3 8750+ and an HD 4670 graphics card. Upgrading to the minimum spec to satisfy Sobon's definition will cost you an extra £260.

Here's what Dell had to say about it in the press release:

  • The Dell XPS 625 gaming desktop is powered by AMD Multi-core Black Edition processors (unlocked) and high-performance ATI Radeon HD graphics, all overclockable through AMD performance tuning software.
  • For power users who want to turn the dial up to 11, the XPS 625 can be configured with: AMD Dragon platform technology, including the 3.0GHz AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition processor combined with dual ATI CrossFireX technology-enabled ATI RadeonT HD 4850 graphics cards, 8GB of memory with a 64-bit edition of Windows Vista plus 10,000 RPM hard drive options for faster startups, faster data retrieval and shorter wait times.
  • The XPS 625 features a brushed aluminum chassis with a choice of either black or red accents, plus the AlienFX customizable lighting system.
  • Support for Dragon platform technology from AMD featuring the new AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition processor.
  • Choice of single card or ATI CrossFireX technology configurations.
  • AMD Fusion for Gaming utility to help improve game performance at the touch of a button.
  • AMD OverDrive utility to help make it easier to overclock the processor for extra performance headroom.
  • Maximum expandability with a 750W power supply, four hard drive bays and an easily accessible ATX chassis.
  • Customizable lights with AlienFX® multi-zone RGB lighting

In the UK, system builders Mesh and YoYoTech have been quick to embrace Dragon.

Here's an image of the base unit and one of AMD's Dragon graphic just because we think it looks cool. Sad, we know.
