Having apparently rushed-out an announcement last September, following the news that Orange had broken O2's UK stranglehold on the Apple iPhone, Vodafone has finally set a date for the launch on the iPhone on its own network.

That date is 14 January 2010. Being fourth (after O2, Orange and Tesco) Vodafone will presumably be keen to demonstrate the unique advantages of buying the iPhone through itself, rather than its competitors. However, it has chosen not to focus on price, with the exception of free calls to other Vodafone phones, for the duration of the initial contract, for those who pre-order.

"We started preparing our network over a year ago so that iPhone customers will really feel the advantage of being with Vodafone," said Guy Laurence, CEO of Vodafone UK.  "We will offer an outstanding iPhone experience wherever our customers live, work and travel, delivering speed and reliability - something our customers have told us they really value."

If you want to use your iPhone as a modem, it will cost you £5 for 500MB, £10 for 1.5GB or £15 for 3GB.

For a quick comparison we had a look at O2, Orange and Tesco prices for a 32GB iPhone 3GS on a two year contract. For £44.05 per month, O2 charges you £96.89 up front, Orange is almost identical at £44.04 per month and £96.50, while Tesco wants £60 per month and £50, but chucks in a few extras.

but chooses not to be aggressive on its pricing

quelle surprise, im sure “chooses” didn't have much to do with it
Vodafone offering unlimited texts on a £30 /month 24 month plan is definitely what i would consider to be ‘aggressive’ on pricing. In fact - It's making me reconsider actually buying an Iphone.

Even if it's not aggressively cheaper at least it's not near-identical to O2 (like Orange was)

Here's why i'm actually considering getting an Iphone then:

with Vodafone:
£30/month - 24 months
16GB 3GS - £149- 300 minutes /unlimited texts / unlimited vodafone to vodafone calls / wifi/interne

contrast Orange:
£30/month (from 1st Jan)
16GB - £120 - 150 minutes /250 texts - unlimited internet/wifi

I.e. - for £30 more upfront - 150 extra minutes, unlimited texts as opposed to 250, and unlimited vodafone to vodafone calls. Works for me.
I remember when I was in the mobile sales ‘biz’ getting people to sign up to £30/month with a free top end phone was nigh on impossible (although they'd happily spend £50/month on Pay&Go, idiots) that was with measly 12month contracts.

Now we're onto 24month contracts, no free phone + £30+ tariffs! Eeeeh times have changed.

Those deals on the 16Gb 3GS

Orange over 24months: £839
Voda over 24months: £869

O2 - £440 on Pay&Go
SIM only deal with 800mins, 1600texts, free internet = £20pm
- £23 going via Quidco
= £657 (assuming 12month SIM only deal) or £897 for 24months.
Also O2 do an ‘iPhone Simplicity’ which is the same tariff + visual voicemail & WiFi

Assuming you want to pay more upfront but this also allows you to ditch the deal after 12months (as there will be at least 1 new iPhone iteration during that 24months if not 2)
Jan 14,such a bad day… got allmy AS resits and im still ill from glanduar fever so am gunna fai!.

Looks like vodafone are trying to add a little something with the free vodaphone calls and it seems like a pretty good deal, although the iphone doesnt interest me and im happy with other phones that are better at taking shots etc for like £15 a month :P.
Hmm, this is a tough one now. I've been waiting for Voda to announce the iPhone, and it is quite enticing. However the 1gb data limit is that enough? Does anyone have an iphone and know if that's a good enough amount of data or are we gonna get screwed?
