SANTA CLARA, CA—SEPTEMBER 22, 2008—Today’s game developers aren’t just interested in high-quality, realistic-looking graphics, they want games that immerse the player into the virtual world. For total immersion, a gaming environment has to “feel” as real as possible and characters must be able to move and interact with the objects in the environment that have a compelling and dramatic impact on game play.  The upcoming game Crysostasis: Sleep of Reason, an interactive crossbreed of a first-person thriller mixed with a decidedly macabre horror novel, is one of a growing number of games that will feature NVIDIA® PhysX™ technology, making the game’s interactive atmosphere that much more immersive and creepy.

“For Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason, it was imperative that the game’s visual effects were properly augmented by a living, breathing environment that actually affects the level of immersion players will experience,” said Darryl Still, International Publishing Director at 1C. “NVIDIA PhysX technology was the only development platform that enabled us to pull off this highly interactive and scary story.”

With the NVIDIA PhysX physics engine, the virtual world of Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason comes to life: clothing can be frozen or unfrozen, broken glass becomes something to avoid, and other objects such as boxes, barrels, and water pipes take on a life of their own when shot at or destroyed. Consisting of a robust physics engine, API, and middleware software, NVIDIA PhysX technology is interactive entertainment’s most pervasive physics engine and is included in more than 140 shipping titles for Sony Playstation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and the PC.
On the PC, PhysX technology harnesses the power of both the CPU and any CUDA™ general-purpose, parallel-computing processor, including any NVIDIA GeForce® 8 Series or higher GPU, giving it the power to handle 10-20 times more visual complexity than what’s possible without a GeForce GPU. Only PhysX technology can leverage the best of both CPU and GPU architectures to deliver the ultimate, immersive, user experience. And with over 80 million CUDA-compatible GeForce 8 Series and higher GPUs shipped to date, PhysX has the largest installed base of general-purpose, parallel-computing processors on which to run.

“1C and Action Forms, the developers of Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason, have produced what will arguably be described as the spookiest game ever to hit the PC platform,” said Roy Taylor, vice president of content relations at NVIDIA. “Gamers are going to love the blend of horror and science fiction storytelling that puts them in the middle of a nuclear ice-breaker, circa 1968. This is one you will need to play with the lights on!”

Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason is slated for release at the end of 2008. For additional information on the game, please visit http://uk.nzone.com/object/nzone_cryostasis_home_uk.html
