The last lap

Despite the best efforts of the developer to try and create a more in-depth track and field game, there are some events that just aren’t as much fun.

Some of the disciplines that require jumping, more notably the High Jump and Triple Jump, have been overcomplicated in terms of controls. There’s just too much to think about: swing, raise, point and press your Wii Remote. It’s pretty difficult to get into these events and enjoy them as much as the others.

However, a few dodgy events (we'll include Archery in that!) doesn’t stop the whole Summer Athletics experience from generally being an enjoyable one. Although we’ve seen some of the same motion-sensing mechanics in other games, the developer has tried to expand on them and has attempted to make the events more complicated, therefore requiring more skill than your average track and field game.

Throwing events, for example, require you to get the angle of your Wii Remote right in order to throw accurately, whereas Cycling requires you to mimic the motions of cycling, using your Wii-mote and Nunchuck as (hand) pedals, whilst tilting the controller to steer around the track.

The presentation of Summer Athletics is also pretty slick, with a Wii Remote-friendly interface, some decent options, such as being able to switch from the third to first person perspective, and an impressive overall look and sound that creates equal amounts of atmosphere and tension within the stadiums.

Overall, in terms of fun factor, it has to be said that Summer Athletics does have a few too many inconsistencies to make it the ultimate track and field game this summer. It just isn't as entertaining as Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games. However, it does have numerous highlights that are worth waiting for, including some challenging and entertaining events.

Pros
Good use of Wii motion-sensing in some events
Plenty to do, tons of events, achievements and competitions.
4-player multiplayer is good

Cons
Some great events, some poor events. Lacks consistency.
No online multiplayer

"An above-average track and field game that makes the most out of the motion-sensing Wii Remote" (6.5/10)
