New weapons, including the awesome meteor strike
There is a good variety in the locations on offer, which span across five areas, including Great Britain and Japan, but the open ended gameplay that I’d expected isn’t to the scale of the likes of GTA, although there’s still plenty of opportunity to experiment with your alien technology and abilities on anything that crosses your path.
There’s a number of new weapons available, including the dislocator, which hurls discs in random directions and the meteor strike, which allows Crypto to call in a meteor; extremely handy for destroying whole buildings. The old favourites that appeared in the first game are back so you’ll be getting to grips with the anal probe, which now requires ammo, and blasting away with the trusty Zap-O-matic. The variety of weapons on offer, the animation of those weapons and the visual effects created, not to mention the physical damage that they can inflict, is possibly the highlight of this action shooter. Whether you’re unleashing a bolt from the sonic boom cannon attached to your flying saucer or using the ‘burrow’ beast ability, which sees an alien worm appear from underground chase and kill a set target, the vibrant effects of such actions are consistently impressive.
Other weapons and abilities include, one my personal favourites is ‘Free Love’, which causes everyone in the vicinity to start partying like they were right back in those hedonistic days of the 60’s. This ability also has a secondary function allowing for Crypto to remain undetected during the duration, so not all of Crypto’s mind controlling techniques are there purely for show. Other abilities include Psychokinesis, which Crypto can use at any time to move an object and Transmogrify, which turns vehicles into ammo; very convenient for when you’re running short.
Destroy all Humans 2 is essentially an action shooter and body snatching and blasting away for long periods of time can become repetitive. Although there are plenty of missions and side objectives on offer, it’s mainly the humour of the game that manages to keep the action fresh rather than anything innovative that you’ll find in the gameplay.
