It's been a big week for smartphone availability. While the HTC Desire HD was launched a while back it has started appearing on operator websites in the last day or so, a bit earlier than we had feared.

Coincidentally or not, the more-recently launched HTC WP7 phones have also become available to buy towards the end of the week.

And the Nokia N8, launched at the same time as the Desire HD and Nokia's latest attempt to crack the high-end smartphone market, has begun cropping up at a few more operators, a few weeks after it supposedly started shipping.

So we thought we'd give you a round-up of the new HTC offerings at the five UK operators, as represented by their online stores at the end of the week, and mention the Nokia N8 while we're at it.

So here's a handy reference table. Note the absence of the HTC Trophy from the Vodafone website, despite that being an exclusive (no sign of the LG Optimus 7 either, for that matter). There's also no sign that we could see of the HTC Desire Z. All the tariffs are 24 month and the lowest price we could see for a ‘free' phone. If they're in brackets they represent an online-only price.

Operator Desire HD HD7 Mozart N8
T-Mobile 40 35
O2 40 40
Vodafone (35) (30)
Orange (32.50)
Three 40

Although phones can do alot more than a few years ago the monthly costs tied in with 24 month contracts makes all these new phones over priced. Alot of discussion on forums over the price of new phones. Seems since Apple get away with, alot of operators and makers are trying it with any new phone.

Pretty much the reason any ‘new’ phone I get will probably be a few months old and second-hand - it certainly won't be tied to any 18/24 month contract!
it's the people that buy the contracts because they think the phone is free that get me.
yup its silly, 24months is way to long… 18months is my limit for high end phones as i cant afford to stump up the cash upfront so it works out to similar pricing but if its a cheapy/mid range phone then 12months does it for me or ill just buy it.

July next year and i can then see what upgrades are available… makes a change that the phone i picked hasnt been superseded yet! HD2 FTW :D.

Even more funny are the offers for TV's and Xbox's

A phone that would usually cost £10 per month can now cost £30 over 24 months and you get a free toy worth £180… So you end up forking out £480 over two years for a gift worth £180 (if that)

Found the HTC desire HD for £25 per month on a third party web site which includes 1gb data and penty of mins and texts on T-mobile… not bad.
