Smartphone straggler Sony Ericsson has announced it will be rolling-out Android version 2.3.4 to the 2011 Xperia range in October, in selected markets. To celebrate it has also launched a brand-new smartphone running this version of Android, called the Xperia neo V, which will also become available in selected markets in Q4.

SE has a mixed record when it comes to keeping its customers up to date with the latest versions of Android, much to their chagrin. It is attempting to rectify this situation, and was keen to stress the following new features enabled by the update:

  • 3D sweep panorama to capture images to view on a 3D TV
  • Facebook Inside XperiaV2 key features: discover and share apps via Facebook, like music from FM radio, 'new from friends' gallery
  • Use USB peripherals by connecting toSony Ericsson LiveDock
  • Swipetext imput
  • Screenshot capture

The Xperia neo V is a mid-range phone. It runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 SoC, which was appearing in some top-end smartphones towards the end of last year. It has a 3.7 inch display, front and back cameras, and HDMI support.

"With this software upgrade, we are bringing a wealth of new and really entertaining experiences to all our 2011 Xperia  smartphones, including those already in consumers' hands today," said Nikolaus Scheurer, head of product marketing at Sony Ericsson. "Our users will get to enjoy new features from Google, an even richer Facebook integration, and enhanced camera functionality from Sony."

I'm guessing from the 2011 range means us X10 are left with 2.3.3. Still not complain though as its made the phone seem like new (better battery, speed and capabilities).

Does that mean that the genuine 2.3 upgrade finally escaped from SE? I'm on Cyanogen6 these days, so I obviously don't get the notifications anymore. I really must get around to flashing with a Cyanogen7 ROM… :geek:
