With the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S III rumoured to be not too far around the corner, yesterday, the firm's branch in Israel announced on facebook, with the post subsequently removed, that the Galaxy S II will receive a full roll-out to Android 4.0 ICS on March 15th.
"We promised we were working on it. You waited patiently. And on 15th March it'll arrive: Android version 4, ICS, to tens of thousands of GALAXY S II devices purchased from cellular companies in the country or directly from us. We are very excited for the launch, hope you are too :)" said Samsung's statement post-translation.
It's not clear exactly when we'll be seeing a UK roll-out and, if Samsung insists on a simultaneous roll-out to contract devices, the release date may very well come down to the co-operation of the UK's cellular providers; however, the announcement is a strong indication that we may see the update sooner, rather than later and, with any luck, within the original first quarter time-frame that Samsung had set for itself.
The Galaxy S II is Samsung's fastest selling smartphone to date, with the firm recently announcing over 20 million sales in the 10 month period since the device's launch, as such, there's no doubt a large number of users eagerly awaiting the update, which, after testing a Beta ROM, this writer can attest to being very quick and smooth; well worth the wait.
