Popular gaming app Cut The Rope has become the first app to scoop a BAFTA at last night's British Academy's Game Awards.

The gaming app, which is published by Chillingo, a division of Electronic Arts and developed by Zeptolab is a physics-based puzzler for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide via Apple's App Store.

The app came top in BAFTA's ‘handheld' gaming category, fending off competition from games available on dedicated handheld gaming consoles the PSP and Nintendo's DS.

"Cut the Rope has been nothing short of a phenomenon on the iOS platform and we're delighted it's been recognized by the British Academy," said Chris Byatte, co-general manager of Chillingo.

The app costs 59p for the iPhone and iPod touch and £1.19 for the iPad version via the App Store.

Looking at the other winners, PS3 game Heavy Rain picked up 3 gongs including Best Technical Innovation, while Mass Effect 2 picked up Best Game and Call of Duty: Black Ops scooped the only public-voted award, the Game trophy.

Kinect Sports perhaps unsurprisingly picked up the Family Award. It has recently been named the fastest-selling gadget of all time, notching up a staggering 10 million sales in just 4 months.

A full list of winners in the various categories is available on BAFTA's website.
