One of the most talked about smartphones at CES this week is the Nokia Lumia 900, the Finnish company’s stylish new Mango-powered handset.

Sadly for UK based HEXUS readers, Nokia's latest device will only be available exclusively via AT&T in the United States over the coming months, with no announced plans to release the phone in the UK or Europe.

The Nokia Lumia 900 “represents a new dawn for Nokia in the US,” said Chris Weber, president of Nokia Americas, in a press release which also lay to bed all the rumours surrounding the handset's official specifications.

Available in cyan and matte black, the Lumia 900 is set to be the first of Nokia’s Windows Phone based devices to feature high-speed 4G LTE connectivity.

It comes equipped with a 4.3in AMOLED ClearBlack Display, a super-charged 1830 mAH battery, an 8 megapixel front-facing Carl Zeiss camera, and runs Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) operating system.

The Lumia 800, which also runs Mango, has been available in the UK since November. The main difference between the Lumia 800 and 900 is the larger screen (3.7in on the 800) and the LTE connectivity.

Like the Lumia 800, this latest model runs the same processor, the 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon, and looks identical.

UK availability?
Nokia hasn’t ruled out a UK release, hinting this week that it may well make an appearance at some point, presumably when a stable 4G network has been established.

"We're getting lots of tweets about Nokia Lumia 900 - UK availability of the Nokia Lumia 900 has not been announced, but watch this space!" wrote Nokia via its Twitter account.

O2 is currently trialing 4G across parts of London having erected 25 masts across the city and supplying a select number of participants with Samsung B3730 mobile broadband dongles.

UK Telcoms regulator Ofcom has also announced that it plans to rollout 4G coverage to 98 percent of the UK population. 4G licenses are up for auction in the UK this year with services expected to begin in 2013.

Full technical specifications of the Nokia Lumia 900 can be found on the Nokia website.

The mind boggles. I'd consider going out tomorrow and buying one of these if it were available in the UK. The *one* WP7 handset that I'd actually consider ditching my iPhone for, and Nokisoft aren't interested in my business.

Insanity.

Indulge my curiosity - what's the deal maker with the 900 that the 800 lacks? I came to the conclusion that it was the larger screen, because I can't see LTE being a big plus, (from what I've seen there's still quite a few areas that have zero 3G coverage, never mind the next generation), and according to the US podcasts I've listened to LTE really drains the battery. :secret:

And the front facing camera
I seriously doubt the front facing camera is 8mp. More like vga front and 8mp rear cameras…
I don't want this phone, but in general I'm getting pretty sick of things that get released elsewhere that don't get released in the UK, particularly after being hyped in the UK. What's that about? Is there some kind of economic barrier I don't understand here? Why tell us about it if you're not going to sell it to us?!
