AMD and Steinberg Media Technologies AG
Collaborate to Optimize

Entire Line of Software for AMD Athlon(tm) Processor

AMD Athlon(tm) processor-based workstations provide excellent performance

for audio and other processor-intensive applications

SUNNYVALE, CA - July 16, 2001. AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced an alliance

with Steinberg Media Technologies AG to fully optimize Steinberg's complete

range of professional audio software for the AMD Athlon(tm) processor.

Cubase VST 5.0 R5, released in June, is the first Steinberg product that

takes advantage of the AMD Athlon processor optimization. Other Steinberg

products optimized for the AMD Athlon processor are planned to be available

later in the year. This joint effort will help ensure that the complete line

of Steinberg professional audio software runs smoothly and reliably on AMD

Athlon processor-based computers.

"Software for professional music production is extremely power hungry. To

offer our customers - among them world-famous composers like Hans Zimmer and

Moby - a fast and reliable working environment, we closely cooperate with

our most important infrastructure partners, such as AMD," said Karl

Steinberg, CEO of Research and Development at Steinberg Media Technologies

AG. "These strategic alliances are the key for developing sophisticated

audio tools and powerful software for music production."

"Steinberg is well known for delivering sophisticated and successful

software tools for professional musicians," said Richard Heye, vice

president of Platform Engineering & Infrastructure for AMD's Computation

Products Group. "Steinberg's software and the high-performance AMD Athlon

processor offer a stable, reliable and ultimately fast platform that audio

professionals demand. The collaboration between Steinberg and AMD is both

natural and beneficial, and provides the two companies with a solution that

enables audio enthusiasts to be both creative and efficient."

The AMD Athlon processor optimization is only
the first step in the alliance

between German-based Steinberg Media Technologies AG and AMD. The two

companies also plan to collaborate on sales and marketing plans.

About the AMD Athlon(tm) Processor

The AMD Athlon processor is an x86-compatible, seventh-generation design

featuring a superpipelined, nine-issue superscalar microarchitecture

optimized for high clock frequency; the industry's first fully pipelined,

superscalar floating point unit for x86 platforms; high-performance cache

architecture, now featuring 384KB of total on-chip cache (256KB of on-chip

level level two (L2) cache and 128KB of on-chip level one (L1) cache);

enhanced 3DNow!(tm) technology with 24 additional instructions designed to

improve integer math calculations, data movement for Internet streaming, and

DSP communications. The AMD Athlon processor features either a 266MHz Front

Side Bus (FSB) or a 200MHz FSB based on the Alpha(tm) EV6 bus protocol. AMD

Athlon processors are manufactured using AMD's 0.18-micron process

technology in Fab 25 in Austin, Texas and AMD's 0.18 micron technology in

Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany.
