Samsung will make its first curved computer monitor available to purchase from tomorrow. We saw the firm reveal a range of 17 different curved TVs at IFA earlier this month and about a fortnight ago Samsung announced this Samsung SD590C curved 27-inch monitor. Now eager tech enthusiasts, in North America initially, will be able to get their hands on one.

The Samsung SD590C is said to have been designed as "the ultimate entertainment display," to which users will feel drawn in. It boasts sleek modern design touches like a super-narrow bezel and Samsung says its built-in stereo speakers offer a surround sound experience. With a nod to gamers the monitor has a "specialized mode," to optimise the monitor for gaming "with just one click".

In some quasi-scientific blurb Samsung claims that "Because the display’s edges are physically closer to the user’s eyes and match their natural curve, users don’t need to shift focus to see the ends of the screen. This component is ideal for serious gamers or office workers who spend extended hours in front of a computer." It also says that the screen's 4000R curvature offers a wider field of view than flat 27-inchers with reduced peripheral visual clutter and a more comfortable viewing experience.

Gaming optimisations

Samsung has furnished this monitor with a dedicated 'Game Mode'. From the description it sounds like a colour curve profile to improve contrast yet also show any action which could otherwise be hidden in the darkest corners of a scene. The game mode impacts the audio too. Samsung has a game-tailored equaliser setting which makes audio effects sound both "true to life" and stand out from the background music.

The Samsung SD590C will be available in the US from 1st October. It has an MSRP of $429.99.

Oh dear. Why did they launch at that res? It's not going to wow people with just the curve to tempt them…

Agreed, I was expecting at least WQHD (or 120hz - especially if being pitched at gamer)

Re: The curve - basic logic would suggest that if their reasoning re: curvature keeping the screen edges of the screen in better focus for the eye (at a fixed focal distance etc.), then the curvature should form an arc of a circle centred around where they think the viewer should sit. Given the gentle arc as clear in the pic of the three-monitor setup, how far away from their desk would they expect people to be sitting. More realistically, either something got lost in translation or the whole curve/focus thing is marketing BS.

I think the choice of resolution was in order to facilitate a three-screen system, as shown in the lower photo. The curve extends across all three monitors…
I know what you mean about the wow factor at that res, but not everyone has the budget to game at the highest resolution, and not everyone has the eyesight to view at it either.

I'm currently gaming on a Dell 3008WFP, and I'm only a short arse, I struggle to get the best viewing position and my 3770k/gtx680 struggle to get anywhere near playable at max res!

thats because your GPU cannot handle this resolution, SLI it and you will see a massive difference, i have GTX 770 SLI and i play @ 2560 x 1440 on Qnix 27" and i can always sustain 60 FPS min on every game maxed out.
