Next generation Server tech
As the ‘excitement' from Larabee died down, Maloney decided to move on to safer ground, discussing Intel's next-generation server processor, Westmere-EP. Maloney noted Intel was still committed to the high-end server market with not only its Xeon but also its *shudder* Itanium processor families.
Ever the optimist, however, Maloney also went on to try and evangelise the audience about buzz phrases like "the convergence of compute," and "networking and storage in the data center," all enabled by Intel's 10GbE solutions.
Sensing it may take more than that to swing the audience in his favour, Maloney quickly moved on to announcing new "ultra-low-voltage" Xeon 3000's, featuring TDP's of only 30 watts. As a sweetener to the enterprise community, Maloney also showed off a whole range of dense, power-optimised platform offerings, even demoing a single-socket "micro server" reference system for the first time.
