While their competitors figure out ways to benefit from any disruption that may be caused by the AMD/ATI merger, the two newly weds are moving forward with plans for a new notebook platform.
As we all know, it's not all about platforms, not individual components. It's been that way since Intel had to take focus away from the CPU because it was... erm... warm and slow (on the desktop, at least). Now that may have changed, but platforms remain. Centrino is possibly Intel's strongest platform, many a popular laptop brandishing the lovely blue and pink logo. So how are ATI and AMD going to take it on?
The answer, according to Digi Times, is with Yokohama. A refresh of Napa is under way, thanks to Intel's Core 2 Merom, so it's that which AMD and ATI has to go after. They'll be doing it with AMD's Turion 64 X2 processors and ATI's up-coming chipsets, known as RS690M, RS690DC and RS790M. CPU and chipset will be coupled with a wireless chip from one of three manufacturers, so say Digi Times' sources.
We'll have to wait and see whether the codename Yokohama changes for the final product, but we're pretty sure it will. And, of course, we'll have to wait and see just how well Yokohama performs when squared up against the mighty Centrino Duo.
