AMD's FreeSync project is ramping up for a significant retail launch early next year with Samsung being the latest vendor to get behind the license-free display technology. At its Future of Compute event AMD revealed that from March 2015 Samsung will bring a full stack of FreeSync monitors to market.
Samsung is starting off with two FreeSync-ready displays; the UD590, available in 23.6in and 28in models, and the UE850, offered in 23.6in, 27in and 31.5in models. At a later date, Samsung intends to expand FreeSync to many of its UHD (3,840 x 2,160) displays.
"We are very pleased to adopt AMD FreeSync technology to our 2015 Samsung Electronics Visual Display division’s UHD monitor roadmap, which fully supports open standards,” said Joe Chan, vice president of SEA, Samsung Electronics. “With this technology, we believe users including gamers will be able to enjoy their videos and games to be played with smoother frame display without stuttering or tearing on their monitors.”
FreeSync is an AMD-developed display technology which allows a display to dynamically adjust its refresh rate to match the framerate produced by a compatible graphics processor. Currently, AMD's Radeon R7 260, 260X, R9 285, R9 290(X) and R9 295X2 have full support for FreeSync as well as Beema, Kabini, Kaveri, Mullins, Temash and the recently-announced Carrizo APUs.
First-generation FreeSync displays will equip compatible scalers made by MStar, Novatek and Realtek and support FHD (1,920 x 1,080) and QHD (2,560 x 1,440) at up to 144Hz, or UHD (3,840 x 2,160) at up to 60Hz.
