Razer has announced a new member of its Leviathan speaker range. The Razer Leviathan Mini Bluetooth Speaker is aimed at those for whom portability is paramount, yet despite its compactness Razer insists that it still offers "uncompromised audio quality... deep lows and crisp highs". This dual speaker portable audio device offers approximately 10 hours of battery-powered playback time.

Last year Razer launched its Leviathan 5.1 channel sound bar. This audio solution offered two full range drivers and two tweeters in a compact unit intended to sit just below your large TV or monitor screen. Backing up that quad-speaker array was a subwoofer unit that looked like a giant keyboard keycap, providing "chest-thumping, deep impact bass". The Razer Leviathan Mini Bluetooth Speaker doesn't bear much resemblance to the previous Leviathan, however they do both offer Bluetooth v4.0 and NFC pairing options.

Razer Leviathan Mini Bluetooth Speaker specifications:

  • Dimensions: 54mm / 2.12” (L) x 185mm / 3.34” (W) x 55mm / 2.16” (H)
  • Weight: 538g / 1.21lbs
  • Battery type: 2600mAH rechargeable Lithium-ion battery
  • Battery life: Up to 10 hours, Charge time : 4 hours
  • Bluetooth wireless range: 10m / 30ft, Combo Play wireless range : 4m / 13ft

  • Connection methods: Devices that support Bluetooth wireless audio profile [Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), 3.5 mm audio jack. For calls: Devices that support Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile (HFP1.5)

As you can see from the above spec, the Leviathan Mini can connect to your smartphones, tablets and other Bluetooth devices up to 30 feet away. Users also have the option to sync two Leviathan Minis to produce true wireless stereo using Razer's Combo Play feature. To make connections easier this Bluetooth speaker system features NFC one-touch pairing. The Leviathan Mini can also be useful in handling calls; a built-in microphone offers Clear Voice Capture technology.

"Portable speakers today present so many compromises when it comes to delivering sound on-the-go – whether it's audio quality, battery life or connectivity – and that's something we didn't want to do with the Razer Leviathan Mini," said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. "There isn't a more balanced portable speaker solution out there".

The Leviathan Mini is available for pre-order now via RazerZone.com. It is priced at US $179.99 / EU €199.99. Availability worldwide is scheduled for January 2016.

I don't know why I would buy a Razer one over one of the many other options currently available from companies with strong audio pedigree?
