Fractal's playing it safe and as a result the XL R2 is essentially a bigger, roomier Define R4 priced sensibly at £105.
Fractal Design is a relative newcomer to the chassis marketplace, yet has managed to make an instant impression through a range of chassis that almost always manage to find a sweet spot between thermal performance and low-noise operation.
The problem, if you can call it that, is that we're now expecting to see the Swedish outfit raise the bar with each new release. That's easier said than done when your business is producing monotone steel boxes, and having found a winning formula, Fractal doesn't appear to want to stray too far from common ground.
These circumstances are summed up perfectly by the Define XL R2. As the company's only current full-tower solution, this is a chassis that probably should have all the bells and whistles, but instead what we have is a well-featured enclosure that provides what you'd expect from a Fractal Design solution without complicating matters.
Great cooling performance is coupled with excellent soundproofing - you can barely hear the system at times - build quality is good throughout and the extra size makes the chassis more suitable for extreme rigs. Fractal's playing it safe and as a result the XL R2 is essentially a bigger, roomier Define R4 priced sensibly at £105. We'd like to see a refreshed aesthetic approach and a little fine tuning here and there, but without pushing the boat out Fractal Design has put together another sure-fire hit.
Bottom line: You'd have to search long and hard to find a sub-£105 full-tower chassis that's as functional and quiet as the Define XL R2.
The Good
Keeps noise levels in check
Good thermal performance
Large enough for extreme builds
Easy to work with
Solid build quality
The Bad
Fan controller limited to three fans
Optical drive bays aren't tool-free
Aesthetics may be too simple
