Conclusion

With a modest overclock and no dedicated heatpipes, Palit's GTX 950 StormX Dual may struggle to stand out...

With a nip here and a tuck there, Nvidia has borrowed from the existing GeForce GTX 960 to create a new graphics card for the mainstream market.

Dubbed GeForce GTX 950 and armed with two fewer SM units than the full implementation of the GM206 die, this new addition lowers the GTX 900-series entry point and offers a solid starting point for anyone looking to take their first steps into the world of PC gaming.

Yet, as is so often the case, post-launch variance in regional pricing has muddled the message. Nvidia's official MSRP positions GTX 950 at $159 - a good $40 less than GTX 960 - but here in the UK the price gap has narrowed considerably. Shopping around reveals that GTX 960 can now be found for less than £145, and that includes a free copy of Metal Gear Solid V: Than Phantom Pain.

Such aggressive pricing is, at present, eroding the appeal of the entry-level GTX 950. With a modest overclock and no dedicated heatpipes, Palit's GTX 950 StormX Dual may struggle to stand out, and though this remains a safe choice for 1080p gaming, the current £130 price tag puts it a touch too close to more powerful alternatives.

The Good

The Bad
A safe bet for 1080p gaming
Keen pricing in some regions
Can easily be pushed further
Silent at idle, quiet when gaming

Memory could be a limitation

Conservative factory overclock
No heatpipes to aid cooling
