Conclusion

...seamlessly transforms a laptop's capabilities by adding a larger display, wired network access and enough USB ports for a wide range of peripherals.

HP's EliteDisplay E243d is one of the most interesting monitors we've tested in recent months. Armed with docking capabilities, the 23.8in screen is intended to serve as an instant workspace for laptop users wanting to enhance productivity.

Attached via USB-C, the E243d can seamlessly transforms a laptop's capabilities by adding a larger display, wired network access and enough USB ports for a wide range of peripherals. The monitor's plug-and-play features all work as expected - automatic charging of the laptop battery is a real boon and the pop-up webcam comes in handy - and HP's aesthetic is both modern and sleek.

The EliteDisplay ought to be a valuable companion for any ultra-thin laptop supporting video over USB-C, yet while there's no denying the convenience of single-cable docking, HP's choice of IPS panel ultimately leaves plenty to be desired. Image quality is relatively basic by today's standards, and at £380 a full-HD screen of this ilk isn't befitting the 'EliteDisplay' moniker.

Bottom line: we're not entirely enamoured by HP's EliteDisplay E243d, but we've seen enough to suggest that more monitors should feature USB-C docking capabilities as standard.

The Good

The Bad
Single-cable docking is a joy
Laptop charges during use
Plenty of USB ports
Integrated webcam
Stylish design

Panel not as Elite as the name suggests
No internal speakers
Pricey at £380

They say pricey even if it comes with the stand for “only” 380£.
Get real people. These just stands cost arm and fortune.

As the article hinted at, these are really aimed at the corporate market. The would be ideal for a hot decking scenario or a mobile workforce that needs occasional office space.

And in that scenario (again as the article said) if you are buying 50, 100 or more, you wouldn’t be paying the headline figure!
I like how recent revisions of USB have made vendor-specific laptop docks obsolete overnight. One port, available on all new devices, and it offers all the connectivity you could need from a dedicated dock
