The Synology DS216play is a purpose-built NAS solution geared toward multimedia enthusiasts who require 4K hardware transcoding.
Priced at around £200 and carrying a familiar aesthetic, the dual-bay unit offers a lot of what's good about a Synology server, including simple setup, a class-leading operating system, an array of multimedia options and energy-efficient hardware.
Yet while many Synology solutions are shaped as competent all-rounders, the decision to use an ARM-based STiH412 processor to deliver 4K transcoding makes the buying decision a little more complicated. The switch away from an Intel architecture means that hardware transcoding isn't available to popular apps such as Plex, performance in other areas isn't stellar, and given that the DS216play is aimed at the multimedia crowd, the lack of HDMI output for direct-to-TV playback feels like a missed opportunity.
Bottom line: the DS216play is a competent performer with genuine multimedia credentials but only makes sense if 4K transcoding is an absolute priority.
