Conclusion

Electrical performance matches the paper potential in most areas...

Fractal Design wants in on the lucrative premium end of the consumer PSU market. Such ambition translates to releasing a quartet of 80 PLUS Platinum supplies that tick all the relevant boxes for the enthusiast. Build quality is good, the dimensions are nice and petite, cabling is generous and nicely flexible, whilst the internals are some of the cleanest we have seen.

Electrical performance matches the paper potential in most areas, with excellent efficiency across the board and reasonable ripple suppression. Temps and noise are also amongst the best we have seen, and Fractal has the confidence to back it up with a 10-year warranty.

Then there is the question of price, which for this model is £125. Fractal knows that is the going rate for an 850W/860W Platinum supply from established manufacturers such as Seasonic, EVGA and Corsair, but we'd have hoped the Ion+ Platinum to come in a bit cheaper because the company has yet to prove its mettle in the high-end PSU market.

Nevertheless, the Ion+ Platinum 860P is a well-balanced, high-quality PSU, without any obvious weaknesses, that ought to be on your shortlist if building a premium rig. Recommended

Hmm, I almost added this to my build, but ended up going fanless (seasonic). I love how you highlight the current and compare it to some others, but it would be great to see a comparison widget where I can compare it (or anything) to others not if it's class (like DPReview does). So I could compare this to the Seasonic Prime Titanium, say :)
