Final Thoughts and Rating

HEXUS Verdict:

ADATA's drive is up there with the very best, but we can't see why many opting to pay such a premium when a just-as-quick 240GB SanDisk Extreme is available for less than half the price.

Going by specification alone, it's easy to see why ADATA's XPG SX910 SSD is one of the best LSI SandForce SF-2281 drives to date.

Flexing the restrictions on over-provisioning, it offers more usable capacity than many of its competitors, and continues to deliver performance in spades. Reducing the amount of spare NAND memory could have raised doubts over long-term reliability, but ADATA quells any such concerns by using tightly-screened memory chips and subsequently attaching an excellent five-year warranty.

It should be the SandForce drive to go for, but the SX910's advantages have resulted in an asking price that's incredibly tough to stomach. ADATA's drive is up there with the very best, but we can't see many opting to pay such a premium when a just-as-quick 240GB SanDisk Extreme is available for less than half the price.

[Update] In response to this HEXUS review, ADATA has cut the cost of the 256GB XPG SX910 drive by over 20 per cent, taking retail pricing from £260 to a more reasonable £200.
