On the desktop CPU side, things looked rather murkier, with AMD still playing under-pup to Intel's Great Dane. To this end, the company was apparently reluctant to say much on the subject and was reticent about updating its guidance on CPU products.

AMD told investors it would be looking to expand its gross margins and make a bit more money, especially with the mix of desktop and server chips this quarter more heavily weighted towards 45nm parts. This will be somewhat helped along by the fact the firm's capacity utilization is starting to emerge from its first half ‘09 lows.

Another cash cow still being milked for all it's worth is spin-off firm Global Foundries, with AMD saying it hoped to benefit from the firm's pending acquisition of Chartered Semiconductor. The move is expected to lower costs for Glofo, leading AMD to believe it will soon be benefitting from lower finished wafer prices.
