Only the competent need apply
Unsurprisingly organisations like the ORG, with executive director Jim Killock calling it "a serious erosion of our fundamental human right to privacy," in his blog post today. ORG has created a mailing list for people who want to help campaign against this directive to join, which can be accessed via the blog post.
There is one hope for those opposed to the directive. Regarding access to the data, it states "Member States shall adopt measures to ensure that data retained in accordance with this Directive are provided only to the competent national authorities." Presumably so few national authorities will qualify under this criterion that the whole issue will become redundant.
Below is a montage created during an ORG demonstration against ‘the database state' last October. It's comprised of thousands of photos that supposedly represent the database state. What do you think, is this a significant further erosion of our privacy? If so can anything be done about it? Let us know in the HEXUS.community discussion forums.
