Cheesy Gonzales?
Virgin has created what it claims is the world's first billboard made completely out of cheese to advertise its super-fast broadband...what else?
The cheesy advertising board was made by food artist extraordinaire, Prudence Staite and shown off in London's Covent Garden.
While people may be scratching their heads trying to work out how cheese relates to broadband, the cheese sculpture stars Speedy Gonzales who Virgin has brought back as the face of its ‘fastest broadband in all the UK' campaign and erm, mice like cheese.
Virgin will air its new TV ad featuring the cartoon critter on 23 October and you'll be seeing him until 10 December.
Virgin said: "Speedy is renowned for his ability to run extremely fast, making him the perfect brand ambassador, but he is also famed for his love of cheese which inspired the idea for the billboard."
The billboard was composed of 10 types of cheese, including every mouse's favourite, Double Gloucester, weighing in at 100kg. It took Staite's 13-strong team around 8 days to craft the giant 5m x 4m sculpture.
Staite said: "I have been asked to craft many a strange thing in my time, but a cheese billboard certainly takes the biscuit, or should I say cracker! It was quite a challenge but I am extremely proud that I have helped Virgin Media bring Speedy Gonzales back to the UK."
Speedy Gonzales made his TV debut back in 1954 as part of Warner Bros' Looney Tunes line-up.
Ashley Stockwell, director of brand and marketing for Virgin Media said: "Speedy is the perfect celebrity partner and brings real charm and enthusiasm to our campaign. As the fastest broadband provider in all of the UK, delivering real world speeds of 10Mb, 20Mb, 50Mb and soon, 100Mb, it's great to be teaming up with the fastest Looney Tunes character around. Speedy is a great short cut to communicating all the stand out benefits of superfast broadband and will help us stay several steps ahead of the competition."
