The Google Pixel 4a is the highly anticipated successor to the Pixel 3a, a mainstream smartphone with premium imaging. It has until now been extensively leaked but it is always good to get official news / conformations about such devices. A few hours ago, Google more or less revealed that the latest Pixel smartphone will be unwrapped on 3rd August. Google set up a dummy 'lorem ipsum' page on the Google Play site, and broadcast the teaser on its various social media accounts.

The lorem ipsum site is rather interesting for a couple of reasons. Firstly it isn't normal Latin placeholder filler text, Google has seen fit to insert cod-Latin words and phrases such as "lowlightena capturum… blurtutate bokehus… longlastingis batterum," and more. Secondly there is a colour puzzle which will reveal the redacted test if you solve it (*puzzle solving method at end of article).

Above you can see the puzzle solved result page but I had to switch to Google Chrome to get it to work. The difference is that you can read the full phrase "Introducing The Google Just What You've Been Waiting For Phone," and the date of 3rd August is revealed.

So, now we think we know the release date, what do the latest rumours say about the specs for the Google Pixel 4a? I've bullet pointed the main specs distilled from 9to5 Google below:

  • 5.81-inch AMOLED display with 2,340 by 1,080-pixel resolution in a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 60Hz
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset
  • 6GB of RAM
  • 64GB of UFS 2.1 base storage
  • 3,080mAh battery with 18W fast charging, no wireless charging
  • 12.2-megapixel primary camera with the usual autofocus and OIS/EIS, 8MP selfie cam
  • No 5G, no dual camera, no Face Unlock

Evan Blass reckons the launch price of the Pixel 4a will be US$399, and has shared the image below.

I'm sure its great and all but I still maintain the Pixel range is poor (Or should I say Rich man's) replacement for the old Nexus line. Then again I'm liking the direction Google are taking Android less and less so maybe I'm not the target market. I used to associate the Nexus phone as engineers phone - stripped of the rubbish but good top specs on the cheap. Pixels just feel like a cheap iPhone wannabe.
the 3A was about the same price as the old nexus and is performing admirably. I'm really happy with it, and will be buying mrs Ik9000 the 4a if it's as good. And long live 3.5mm jacks. I hope the 4a still has one too.
The OnePlus Nord is much better value imho: 8GB RAM, 6.44" AMOLED, 5G LTE SIM Free 128GB - £349 on hotukdeals today.

I'd agree. OIS on main 48mp camera but it's still not a fantastic camera but at £350 it's a steal
;)
5.8'' sounds good to me. As long as the battery life is good. And of course if the price is right…

That said, Google's hardware is so god awful I don't think I'll be getting it. I liked the nexus line, when phones were built by phone manufacturers.
