A vibrant, engaging community

The animations and graphics in Anno 1701 are superb and as you build your community you can zoom in and watch the villagers going about their daily business, visiting the local chapel for prayer, schools for learning, carting supplies to and from the warehouses, working in the fields or shopping at the markets. Your community soon becomes a hive of activity and at one point our town folk were so happy they’d head to the village square with a range of musical instruments and march around playing to the their heart’s content. The character models are well detailed and the finely tuned A.I. ensures that they consistently go about the chores that you set for them.

Anno 1701 is a deep game that seems to make time just vanish into the ether. It’s extremely rewarding watching your community grow and once you’ve built up the initial infrastructure you’ll start to feel proud of your newly build community. The graphics and animations are superb, the scenarios are engaging and the presentation and micro-management system used is extremely user friendly. There are so many options that you could write an entire encyclopaedia on the game, but once you’ve got into the swing of things they’ll be no stopping you; you’ll build your initial settlement, make enough money for a fleet of ships, pack the ship with food and resources and then want to head off on the seas to find and build a new community.

Pros
Deep and involving
Great user interface
Superb animations and graphics
So much to do!

Cons
Maybe too overwhelming for those seeking their first RTS experience

A superbly deep RTS that rewards you with a vibrant community that you'll want to take care of.
