Conclusion
In summing up, I’ve got to say that I found DoW to be a superbly enjoyable game to play with a mysteriously addictive mix of ease of play, great graphics and sound and hidden depths. It takes RTS games to a new level by doing pretty much everything right. Though there are a few bugs, such as the pathfinding, and a few niggles such as the camera zoom or the ability to shoot through structures, overall this is a well balanced game that is easy to get into but hard to master on the tougher difficulties and certainly a long term challenge online.
The fact that there is only one campaign and you can only play as one race in it is a bit of a downer as the game is crying out for more of the same. It couldn’t have been too hard to let the player play the same missions from another perspective once they had completed the game playing as Space Marines, could it? But I’m not going to finish on a low note for this review. DoW deserves better. If you’re into RTS in anyway, you’ll get on great with DoW. If you find all of this a bit overwhelming, DoW has some excellent training missions as well as very useful context sensitive help that eases you into the game. You’ll soon be charging over the battlefield like a seasoned vet and taking the fight right to your enemy’s home town.
Pros
Easy to get into
Plenty of Depth
Excellent story driven campaign
Nicely balanced races and units
Superb graphics
Great multiplayer
Cons
AI too easy on normal difficulty
Massed charge tactics still work
Camera max zoom out still a bit too close
You won’t play the campaign more than once
Only four races from the entire Warhammer universe
Overall an excellent RTS the genre can be rightly proud of
