Conclusion and score

That fun factor could have been multiplied if karts handled differently. In Mario Kart (sorry to refer to it again) you have a roster of characters that all have different strengths and weaknesses on the track; and that works extremely well. In ModNation Racers, however, there are some basic options for tweaking Kart set-ups, but no matter how many characters you create or Karts you build they all perform basically the same. Winning in ModNation Racers, no matter how good a driver you are, often comes down to the weapon pods which are split into four categories: boosts, lightning, sound and missile. Like any Kart Racing game you'll get frustrated when you're leading the pack and someone launches a missile up your jacksy to stop you dead in your tracks. Hey, we suppose that's all part of the fun.

In conclusion, it's fair to say that ModNation Racers isn't about to take Mario Kart's crown, no chance of that. It does, however, have a lot to offer in terms of great customisation features that leaves its bright future firmly in the hands on the community. It's a shame you can't tinker with Kart performance more, but with the sheer freedom and depth to create hundreds of inventive and creative tracks to race around, plus a solid performance on the track, ModNation Racers is an impressive entry into the genre.

Pros
Customisation tools are easy to use, yet extremely in-depth
Track Editor adds infinite replay value
Performs well on the track, with smooth handling and fast-paced races
Up to 12 players online

Cons
Would have been nice to be able to tweak Kart performance more
Career mode commentators are irritating and it's a little bit boring
