Samsung has launched its new Exynos 9 Series 8895 processor. This is the first SoC to take advantage of Samsung's "industry leading" 10nm FinFET process technology, with improved 3D transistor structure. According to the firm's own tests the process shrink yields a performance uplift of 27 per cent and a 40 per cent cut in power consumption - compared to 14nm tech based SoCs.
The Exynos 8895 is an octa-core processor which leverages 4x Samsung second generation custom CPU cores plus 4x ARM Cortex-A53 cores. I expect this is a big.LITTLE configuration with Samsung's cores used when the highest performance is required by the system. For graphics computing tasks the Exynos 8895 includes ARM’s Mali-G71 GPU which is based upon ARM's Bifrost architecture, and enables UHD content consumption, premium gaming, and mobile VR experiences. The SoC uses Samsung Coherent Interconnect (SCI) technology to implement heterogeneous system architecture for faster computing.
Other features of the Samsung Exynos 9 Series 8895 are:
- An embeded gigabit LTE modem that supports five carrier aggregation, or 5CA, for up to 1Gbps downloads / 150Mbps uploads.
- An advanced Memory Flow Controller (MFC) to support video recording and playback at a maximum resolution of 4K UHD at 120fps.
- An embedded Vision Processing Unit (VPU) that can recognize and analyse items or movements for improved video tracking, panoramic image processing, and machine vision technology.
- A security processing unit for enhanced security solutions required for mobile payments that use iris or fingerprint recognition.
