With the release of the FX 8-Core processors (aka Zambezi) just around the corner, AMD is offering some useful advice to get your rig into top shape.

On the AMD blog, product marketing manager Adam Kozak has outlined a three-step process to ensure a smooth transition to the first native 8-core desktop processor, which aims to deliver a significant boost in performance and speed.

Kozak advises that rigs should have a motherboard with an AMD 9-series chipset and the BIOS should be flashed with the latest version. Finally, he recommends a high-end AMD Radeon graphics card, suggesting an AMD Radeon HD 6850 graphics card or higher. He would, wouldn't he?

“Follow these steps to be sure your PC is fully equipped to experience the unlocked and unrestrained power of AMD FX when the CPU hits the market this quarter.”

Read the full three-step guide at the AMD blog.

The AMD FX-Series processors are based on its new "Bulldozer" microarchitecture and three CPUs will be available this quarter, including the 8-core FX-8150, which clocked at 3.60 GHz, and 16 MB of (L2 + L3, total) cache; the 8-core FX-8120, clocked at 3.10 GHz, and 16 MB of cache; and the 6-core FX-6100, clocked at 3.30 GHz, and 14 MB of cache.

A firm release date and prices for the UK market are yet to be confirmed.

Ehhhh what? 9 series mobo?

I hope he is wrong!
You'll need a motherboard supporting the AM3+ socket. The 9-series mobos do, naturally, though a select few 890FXs - updated to the latest revision and BIOS - will do, as well.
oh balls! i only have an AMD 5 series card… looks like im gunna miss out.

I hope your wrong as well :p

The line was: AM3+ socket was needed……I really hope it's not now “AM3+ socket with very specific chipsets”
Sadly this may make some ‘special’ individuals go out and buy all the latest amd stuff, misled by some sales guy who just wants you to buy all the latest amd stuff…
