Samsung Exynos 5 Octa demonstrated at CES

Samsung talked about the Exynos 5 Octa, a new eight core processor, at a keynote presentation at the CES last night. However the firm wasn’t just talk, it had built a reference tablet device to demonstrate the possibilities of the new processor to the audience.

Stephen Woo, president of Samsung Electronics' components business, described the new Exynos 5 Octa as “An architecture that gives you all the power you want to run intense applications but is smart enough to conserve energy when you are running more basic tasks.” The new processor is said to offer something we often hear about recently; a “high performance, low power” computing nirvana.

Woo said the processing power on offer “has never been seen before in a mobile device... for heavy duty multitasking... all without lag or disruption to other applications.” On the topic of games performance Woo promised the Exynos 5 Octa processor would offer 3D performance that is twice as good as any previous generation processors. (Woo is pictured above with 2 fingers raised as he makes this point.)

Looking at a bit of technical info for the Exynos 5 Octa; the processor is based upon the ARM Big.LITTLE technology where the big cores are a Cortex-A15 design and the LITTLE cores are a lower power Cortex-A7 design. Specifically the Exynos 5 Octa features four Cortex-A15 cores and four Cortex-A7 cores. The Exynos 5 Octa will be a 28nm part.

Also in the above video Samsung shows off its flexible OLED displays (from about 40 minutes onwards) and surprisingly Bill Clinton pops up at the end of the video with a message about “Samsung Hope for Children”.

It isn’t mentioned when the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa will be made available but it will probably be facing fierce competition from other new improved mobile processors such as the NVIDIA Tegra 4 and Qualcomm 800 Series when it does appear.

More likely for a tablet than a smartphone, as even at 28nm that'll be one big power hungry chip.

Either a note 2 10.1 would be quite an upgrade to a nexus 10 as well!

On 28nm even dual core A15s are a stretch for normal smartphone chassis unless clocked a lot lower than say the Chromebook or Nexus 10. Quad core A15s are going to have to down-clock a long way and use companion cores and aggressive power save settings or they'll run a phone battery down in hours and/or melt.

That's why Qualcomm and Apple's current best are not A15 based… they've done their own work, enhancing A9s etc

How about a Chromebook/Ultrabook type device running WindowsRT? Octacore would make it pretty rapid and the chassis would be big enough to accommodate a hefty battery.

Got to say that my Note 10.1 is rapid enough for me as it is with a “mere” quad core.
There's an awful lot wrong with that Anandtech article, but yeah, generally, quad A15 isn't really feasible for phones at 28nm.

When I first saw Octa Exynos 5, I was thinking 8 A15 cores! I wonder if all 8 cores can be active at the same time? If not, wouldn't it make more sense to name it a quad like Nvidia's Tegra 3, although it technically has 5 application cores?
I'll wait patiently to upgrade my Nexus 10 to a Note 10.1 2. No rush mind.
